Momentum (10)
Momentum
The absolute version of the ROC: simply the price difference from ten days ago, expressed in euros or dollars instead of percent.
Construction & calculation
- Momentum = today's closing price minus the closing price of 10 trading days ago.
- The scanner then smooths that line with an SMA(9) to remove the flapping around the zero line.
Momentum = C(today) - C(10 days ago)
Filtered = SMA(Momentum, 9)
Interpretation
- Above zero: the price is higher than ten days ago. Below zero: lower.
- It is about the slope: a rising momentum above zero means acceleration, a falling momentum above zero means the trend is having a harder time.
How the signal works in this scanner
Buy signal (green)The smoothed momentum crosses zero from below to above within the last 15 bars and is still above it.
Sell signal (red)It crosses zero from above to below and stays below it.
Watch-outs & pitfalls
- Because the value is in price units, the levels are not comparable between stocks. Only the zero line has meaning.
- For comparison between stocks you are better off using the ROC (percentage).
