TRIX
Momentum
Triple Exponential Average (Jack Hutson): the percentage change of a triple-exponentially-smoothed price line. Particularly noise-free.
Construction & calculation
- Take the EMA(15) of the closing price.
- Take the EMA(15) of that again, and of that result the EMA(15) once more.
- TRIX = the percentage daily change of that triple-smoothed line.
EMA1 = EMA(C, 15)
EMA2 = EMA(EMA1, 15)
EMA3 = EMA(EMA2, 15)
TRIX = 100 x (EMA3(today) - EMA3(yesterday)) / EMA3(yesterday)
Interpretation
- The triple smoothing filters out practically all cycles shorter than the chosen period. What remains is the underlying trend.
- Above zero: the smoothed price line is rising. Below zero: it is falling.
- Divergence between TRIX and price is rare, but when it occurs it is telling.
How the signal works in this scanner
Buy signal (green)The TRIX crosses the zero line from below to above.
Sell signal (red)The TRIX crosses the zero line from above to below.
Watch-outs & pitfalls
- Slow. The TRIX finds no bottoms; it confirms trends that are already underway.
- The values are small (often less than 0.1). Look at the sign and the slope, not the magnitude.
- Requires at least 50 trading days.
